Unofficial World TtV Day

May 18, 2009

A group on Flickr is attempting to organize the third annual “TtV Day” for Saturday, June 13th. The idea is to take at least one TtV picture and post it to the group on Flickr.

For those who don’t know, TtV is an acronym for “Through the Viewfinder”. It’s a specialized genre of photography whereby you shoot using two cameras. One — typically an old medium or large format camera — points at the subject. The other — usually a modern digital camera — takes a picture of the viewfinder of the first camera. These viewfinders very often have dirt and scratches. The end result is wonderfully filled with character.

I do have a TtV rig that I built up a while back. I have only played with it once or twice but I love the effect and would dearly love to collect more old cameras to try it even more.

Those who have the equipment and are interested (or if you just want to look at the pictures) can check out the group at http://www.flickr.com/groups/throughtheviewfinder/
